Another Interesting Article on Breast Cancer Prevention
October 2nd, 2007 drberakaThe October 2007 issue of VOGUE magazine published a great first person article (on page 324) by Amy Cohen. Ms Cohn has the breast cancer gene which carries an 85% risk of developing breast cancer, often before menopause.
Ms. Cohn describes in vivid detail how she evaluated her options and finally decided to have bilateral mastectomies and breast reconstructions before she developed breast cancer. These are called prophylactic mastectomies.
I have done breast reconstruction in a number of these high risk but disease-free women. The results are gratifying. Ms. Cohn stresses the positive in her story. Her new, reconstructed breasts are quite a bit bigger than her old ones and she enjoys the new look and the extra attention.
