New York City, NY- We have recently made an important advance in how we do a tummy tuck. The skin of the abdomen is lifted up in the course of doing the tummy tuck and traditionally at the end of the operation two drains are inserted under the skin. The drains are left in for several days and their main purpose is to prevent fluid accumulation under the skin, also known as a seroma. The drains works very well but are a little uncomfortable and patients look forward to their coming out.
We now use an alternative technique which has minimized the need for drains. We use either no drain or just one drain, and we leave it in for fewer days. The new technique consists of closing the cavity under the lifted skin of the abdomen with several buried absorbable sutures. The role of these internal stitches is to eliminate the potential cavity under the skin and therefore they are very effective in preventing fluid accumulation. Thus, much less need for drains.

New York City, NY- The February issue of “More” magazine has a useful article about abdominoplasty. It tells the story of a tummy tuck step-by-step, from thinking about it to final healing. The patient accurately describes the pain as quite tolerable.
I have one important point of disagreement with the article. We do almost all tummy tucks as outpatients in our Accredited Surgical Suite. The patient may go home or to a hotel, but always with one of our specially trained registered nurses.

The usual tummy tuck will give a flat stomach and can require a two week, pretty uncomfortable recovery. It is pretty important to understand that many patients do not need a full abdominoplasty. Some women only have excess skin and fat below the belly button. These patients benefit from a simpler lower abdominoplasty or mini tummy tuck. This mini abdominoplasty has a much easier and shorter recovery period. Patients can be back at work in four days. The scar is also shorter.
